In Memory of Ramon Martinez

Ramon “Tony” A. Martinez, 68, of Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania died Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at Bethlehem Manor in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.  Born in Guayama, Puerto Rico, he was the son of Emma Cerezo.

Tony was a retired police chief for the New York/New Jersey Port Authority. Among many accomplishments, he was a firearms instructor and trained at Quantico at the FBI Academy. He was a first responder in the 9-11 attacks in New York and later was instrumental in updating emergency plans including coordinating the installation of anti-terrorist devices and implementing anti-terrorist security initiatives.

Ramon was of the Catholic faith and was a member of St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church in Jersey City, New Jersey. He loved to study astronomy and enjoyed looking at the stars. Ramon had strong family values and cherished his time with them immensely. A professional body builder, he was featured in the April 2001 issue of Muscle & Fitness Magazine highlighting law enforcement officers.

Along with his mother, Ramon is survived by his children: Crystal Martinez of Stroudsburg, PA; Anthony Martinez of Youngstown, OH; grandchildren: Valentina, Jovanni, Marai, Nevaeh, Lily, Blaine; sister Maria Cerezo of PR; his former wife, and cherished friend, Nilsa Martinez.

A memorial mass will be celebrated on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:30 am at St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Church, 122 Ferry Street, Jersey City, NJ 07307. Burial of cremated remains will follow at Holy Name Cemetery, 823 Westside Avenue, Jersey City, NJ.

Private cremation has been entrusted to the Joseph J. Pula Funeral Home, Inc., 23 N 9th Street, Stroudsburg, PA 18360.
