Mario Salazano “Murph” to friends and family — died peacefully on November 6, 2024, at 99 years old. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he spent his final hours surrounded by those who adored him. Their lives are brighter, kinder, steadier, and richer for his presence in them. He is predeceased by his wife of nearly 69 years, Concetta Salzano; she’d have taken pride in the grace and care he showed to those who survive them, including their five children, Anne, Francesca Vignapiano (Michael), Joseph (Brian Moore), Loretta Sullivan (Richard), and Martha Ryan (Joseph), as well as their 14 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and scores of cousins. For Murph, each was an unending source of pride, joy, and happiness.
Murph’s impact was felt by his city, as well as his family; a decades-long employee of the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, Murph helped shape the public image of New York City for commuters, residents, and visitors. Most notably, he oversaw all public areas of the World Trade Center, from the very conception of the Twin Towers. Guests of the Observation Deck, Windows of the World, and shopping concourse saw and appreciated Murph’s handiwork. His contributions long outlived his retirement in 1989. His family will miss his intelligence, and his gentle, reassuring presence — even if they won't miss the countless hours of PBS’ Classic Arts Showcase.
Mario worked at the Port Authority for 38 years, from 1951 until 1989, primarily in the World Trade Department, retiring as Manager of the Public Services Division. Mario served as a Director on the Board of the Port Authority Retirees Association from 1994 to 2009.
His wake is scheduled for Monday, November 11, 2023 between 2 pm and 7 pm.
