Ken Sass, 73, died
Tuesday, Oct 16, 2012 at SECU Hospice House of
Brunswick. Ken was born on June 9, 1939 in Greenpoint,
Brooklyn, NY to Anthony I. and Elizabeth A. Sass.
Survived by his wonderful, fantastic wife of 48 years,
Eleanor (Lipinski) Sass, son Russell E. Sass of
Calabash, daughter Jennifer A. MacBean and her husband,
Scott of Carolina Shores.
He is also survived by
his sister, Jacqueline Henry, Lake City, FL,
Mother-in-law Helen Lipinski, Toms River, NJ,
Brother-in-law Edward Lipinski, Toms River, NJ and many
nieces, nephews and cousins.
Ken resided in Manalapan, NJ for 29 years. He was a
volunteer member of the Gordon's Corner Fire Company for
19 of those years.
Ken began his career with
the Port Authority of NY & NJ in 1957, as a messenger.
He then served in the US Army in Germany from 1960-1962.
He continued his career with the Port Authority and
retired as General Manager of the Holland Tunnel in
1994, after 37 years of service and moved to NC. Ken was
a graduate of Adelphia University.
Ken enjoyed boating,
fishing and golf. He volunteered for the Calabash Elks
and was the founder of the Kazoo band in 1998. He also
volunteered for the American Legion Post 503 and the
Brunswick County Sheriff's Department and was presented
with the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award.
He also enjoyed traveling
with Eleanor in their RV with their many Airstream
friends, visiting Alaska, sleeping out on the Tundra in
Manitoba, camping throughout the Southwest and many
Ken was a member of Saint Brendan's RC Church in
Shallotte. Mass will be held there 10am on Saturday, Oct
20. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to
Lower Cape Fear Hospice.
