James J. Tully

James J. Tully, 87
, of Spring Lake passed away Friday, July 30, 2010 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. Born in Jersey City he summered in Spring Lake since his youth until permanently retiring there in 1971. Jim also resided winters in Palm Beach Shores, Fla. Mr. Tully had been employed by Western Union before becoming a police officer for the Port Authority of NY/NJ retiring in August 1971 after 22 years, working most of his career at the George Washington Bridge.

He proudly served his country in the US Navy during WWII as the Quartermaster of the USS Severn during the Battle of Layette Gulf. As a longtime Spring Lake resident, Jim was a member of the Spring Lake Planning Board and coached Spring Lake Recreation Soccer. He was a faithful Communicant of St. Catharine's & St. Margaret's Parish. Jim was also an avid Met and Giants follower.

Jim was predeceased by his brother, John Tully of Spring Lake Heights. Surviving is his devoted wife of 61 years, Eleanor Steiger Tully; his daughter, Patricia Burke and husband Michael of Somerset; his three sons, James and wife Cathyann of Holmdel, Michael of Belmar, and Paul and wife Martha of Brick, and his five beloved grandchildren, Jimmy, Danny, Courtney, Kelly, and Molly Tully. He will be deeply missed by his many friends from Church, beaches & boardwalk.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Monday August 2nd 2010 from 4-8pm at the O'Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 and New Bedford Rd., Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Tuesday August 3rd, 2010 at 11:00 am at St. Catharine's RC Church, Spring Lake. Committal will be private at the convenience of the family.
