Family Photo Richard Mast, 1980STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Lifelong New Dorp resident Richard A. Mast, 67, a Vietnam veteran and former Port Authority surveyor and engineer, died at home Friday after a courageous fight with cancer.

A graduate of the former Augustinian Academy, Grymes Hill, Dicky, as he was known to his family, received bachelor of science degrees in cartography and civil engineering from the City College of New York, Manhattan

Mr. Mast was employed by the Port of Authority of New York and New Jersey in Manhattan for 30 years, first as a surveyor and then as chief of his surveying party. He was later promoted to the position of real estate engineer in the Port Authority’s legal department.

Mr. Mast received commendations from the Port Authority for his map-making skills, which included helping to determine the boundaries of the former World Trade Center.

Upon his retirement in 1996, Mr. Mast was active in the Oakwood Heights Veterans of Foreign Wars, serving as commander and later treasurer of the post. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Boy Scouts of Staten Island.

Mr. Mast served with the Army in Vietnam from 1965-67.

“Dicky was a gentle soul who truly will be missed by those who knew and loved him,” said his family. Family members noted that Mr. Mast “had a very dry sense of humor and was respected by his friends and colleagues for is mathematical skills.” Indeed, his hobbies included finding mistakes in calculus textbooks and crossword puzzles.

Mr. Mast was a parishioner of Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp.

He is survived by a sister, Christine Froner, and several nieces and nephews.

Arrangements are being handled by Hanley Funeral Home, New Dorp, with a 10:30 a.m. mass Tuesday in Our Lady Queen of Peace R.C. Church, New Dorp. Burial will be in Moravian Cemetery, Dongan Hills.
